13th August 2023, NIA Diagnostic Imaging

A 49-year-old lady presented with pain in her right breast. There is a strong family history of breast cancer. Breast examination was difficult because of “lumpiness” of the breasts. She was referred for a breast ultrasound at NIA. Ultrasound showed two lesions in the right breast – one at 3 o’clock, 2cm from the nipple and another at 7 o’clock, 2cm from the nipple.

An urgent discussion between our radiologist and the referring doctor was organised, followed by an urgent biopsy performed on the same day for this patient. Pathology results indicated low to intermediate grade ductal carcinoma in situ at the 3 o’clock lesion and fibrous benign breast tissue at the 7 o’clock lesion.

The patient underwent a total right mastectomy and is currently recovering well. Thanks to early detection and prompt communication between the patient’s managing clinician and the radiology team, this patient was able to avoid further metastases. She has been returning to our clinics for ongoing monitoring scans as per their breast and oncology specialists.
