Current U.S. dietary guidelines do recommend higher intake of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-6 PUFA) to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (1,2). This pro-Omega-6 fatty acid stance remains rather contentious. While there is data supporting cholesterol benefits of linoleic acid (LA), the predominant dietary n-6 PUFA and higher dietary n-6 PUFA (predominantly LA) is associated with lower CHD risk in prospective cohort studies (3), not all cohort studies have confirmed these benefits (4).…

We all have patients with high triglycerides (TG) that warrant intensification of our lipid lowering treatment. Statins are efficacious in reducing total cholesterol (TC), increasing high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and reducing low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Statins also reduce triglycerides levels but often these patients have residual hypertriglyceridaemia that warrants the addition of a fibrate to get our TG to target.…

It’s not often that we report on trials with negative results but this trial attracted my attention because of many issues it raised when the top-line results were announced in the Journal of American Medical Association a fortnight ago. The conclusion states “supplementation with vitamin D3 or omega-3 fatty acids, compared with placebo, resulted in no significant difference in change in eGFR at 5 years.
